Artist Statement
This documentary shoot surrounds the day of R. A. Hapke, a professional digital illustrator, recent owner of The Gaming Geeks website, and obviously, a passionate table top RPG player. During the spring, summer and fall months, Hapke works landscaping as well as illustrating; so during he uses the winters to recharge his creative batteries. He also creates digital tiles and map design elements for an online company, Roll20.net.
In this series of photos, Mr. Hapke's day is somewhat random, and at times seemingly mundane. However, it is the everyday mundane tasks that help his subconscious develop ideas that will later be turned into digital creations. On this day, I was fortunate enough to go early in the evening and witness a gathering of free-spirited people who were using his digital tile work for table top role play. The gathering proved to be quite festive, with a family that harbors stray animals that seem to find their way to the table amongst the players, including the subject.
I have chosen imagery that I feel most describes Mr. Hapke's creative and spirited personality. I also found it important to include a few shots of his home, and his yard which is his own little creative universe.
