Project 2 Reseach - 3 other documentary photographers

Carolyn Brandt

Within this documentary blog, the photographer expresses the importance of the market within the community atmosphere. Even in Los Angeles, farmer's markets make an impact on the community. Carolyn plays with shutter speeds, and different saturation. This is exactly what I wish to convey for my Project 2 photo doc.

Anna-Liisa Nixon

This documentary photographer not only recognizes the event, but the gathering of family from out of town as an add-on experience for the family. The farmers' market provides the experience to bring people together in an atmosphere they normally might not be, such as a supermarket. I loved the crisp quality Anna-Liisa's photos, and the way she plays with depth of field.

Frances Schwabenland

The review ties in with my project through the emotions and expressions that farmers markets tend to bring to various communities. It's all about community and people enjoying trade of products and wares created locally by the same community.

Artist Statement

Experiencing a farmer’s market is to experience the fun and spontaneity of everyday life, presented in a limited time offering. I am taking photos ranging from wares to sellers, immobile objects to variable paced shoppers. The experience of photography, especially in such situations, is difficult at best not to receive some sort of interaction with those around me, and in some instances it enhances the experience. Sellers want their booths to be shown in the best possible light, straightening and primping their tables, donning their biggest smiles. Of course, with what I witness at events like this, there is little need for such concern.

Adorning shelves, cabinets, displays racks and in every nook and cranny, the Farmer’s Market is a visual paradise. Taking pictures is a pleasure in such an environment.  The decisions of what to take pictures of are simply presented by the spontaneity of vibrant colors with each step. The contrast in textures and light make it a phenomenal atmosphere to document through photography.

Playing with lighting, camera angles, and shutter speed, I am focusing on presenting the simple beauty and bustling activity of the Farmer’s Market. There is a cheerful nature about the place, and in my work, I am focusing on expressing that emotion, that fullness of life that comes with entering this event.
